You don't realise how important that - probably throwaway line!! - became in my quest! So, if that's what that annoying 'T' means, it gave me a clue as to what the initial problem might be. Yes, OK, an old Debian version and original u-boot, but the very fact it worked has given me a great deal of renewed confidence that it is possible. So, now I can move on to your suggestions of updating u-boot and using a later version knowing it's not impossible. Thanks so much!
